Joliet West High School is located in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago, and is home to over 3,400 students. Joliet West's Vocal Music department is among its prized jewels, and it features three curricular choirs, an annual Spring Musical, a Fall Opera Scenes program, a Chamber Choir, and it feeds students into the Joliet West Chapter of Modern Music Masters.
Joliet West's Choirs include a Concert Choir of Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors which is an auditioned group. The Concert Choir performs selections ranging from Renaissance, to Multi-cultural, to modern works. The Concert Choir received the title of Grand Champion at the St. Louis "Music in the Parks" festival in Spring of 2010 and 2014, and at Cincinnati's "Music in the Parks" festival in Spring of 2012. The Concert Choir also received a superior rating at "Music in the Parks" in Chicago in 2013 and the Nashville Choir Contest in 2016. Joliet West also features a Mixed Choir made up primarily of upperclassmen, and a beginning Women's Ensemble. In addition to the curricular groups, Joliet West has a Chamber Choir which meets outside of class, and student-led small chamber groups. The Vocal Music program is also the parent program to the unique Opera Scenes program at Joliet West. A rarity among high school ranks, the Opera Scenes program promotes healthy singing, in a natural high school voice as well as an awareness of opera literature. |
